Native Basil

This delightful wild herb, Ocimum tenuiflorum, is related to the Asian Holy Basil and grows through the drier regions of Northern Australia. Possibly introduced hundreds of years ago by the Indonesian traders, pre-European settlement, it has naturalised itself to survive Australia’s harsh desert conditions.

Native BasilLike other basils, it is an annual, which flowers prolifically with Lilac florets soon after Summer.

At Reedy Creek Nursery, Native Basil is organically cultivated in growing boxes of composed sea weed. This sustainable production of Native Basil can guarantee availability of tender sprigs from September to May.

It has a fresh apple, cinnamon aniseed flavour and aroma, which lends itself to Asian style cooking.
